Super Saturday Wagering at Belmont Park

With the Breeders’ Cup just five weeks away, Saturday is key to many of the top contenders for racing’s championship two day event.

There are a dozen Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” races slated for Saturday afternoon,  six at Belmont Park, five at Santa Anita Park, and one overseas at Newmarket.

This year’s Breeders’ Cup will be held on Nov. 2-3 at Santa Anita Park. (See full odds at

Future wagering on the Breeders’ Cup odds is well underway, with lines posted for both the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic as well as the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic.

The two early betting favorites for the Ladies’ Classic will be in action on Saturday in the $400,000 Beldame invitational (G1) at Belmont Park, the first of six stakes on the eleven race card.

Royal Delta won last year’s Ladies’ Classic and comes into the Beldame off a runner up finish in the Personal Ensign (G1) at Saratoga, beaten a half-length by upset winner Love and Pride.

Checking in third in the Personal Ensign was It’s Tricky, who will take on Royal Delta for the fifth time when they meet on Saturday.

It’s Tricky ran second in last fall’s Ladies’ Classic, beaten 2 ½ lengths for the top spot.

Currently at Bovada, Royal Delta is the betting favorite for the Ladies’ Classic at 5-2 while It’s Tricky is listed at 4-1 betting odds.

Love and Pride, who returned $22.00 for the win in the Personal Ensign has shipped to Santa Anita and is the 4-1 fourth choice in the $250,00 Zenyatta (G1).

She is listed at 15-1 betting odds for the Ladies’ Classic.

Saturday’s stakes action starts with the Beldame:

Belmont Park Race 5 The Beldame Invitational G1 (Post time 2:58 ET)

6 It's Tricky   7-5

3 Royal Delta   1-1

4 Cash for Clunkers   8-1

5 Disposiblepleasure   12-1

Analysis: It's Tricky has finished behind Royal Delta the last three times they have met, most recently checking in a length behind her in the Personal Ensign where the duo was upset by Love and Pride at 10-1. Our top pick was compromised when she stumbled not once but twice at the start costing her some ground and position. She tracked the early pace while under a snug hold, made a good move approaching the quarterpole and did not have enough punch left late, weakening to finish third. Don't forget that was her first go off a three month break. The Kiaran McLaughlin is perfect in her two starts over the Belmont Park main track, winning the Ogden Phipps (G1) two back and the Acorn (G1) in the mud last June. She should get a good tracking trip and her margin over her main rival may increase slightly if there is still some moisture in the racing strip.

Royal Delta ran second in this race last year behind Havre de Grace and then went on to win the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs. Her trip to Dubai did not work out very well as she checked in ninth in the World Cup (G1) facing the boys, but she has run very well since returning to the U.S. She won the Fleur de Lis (G2) at Churchill Downs and was then all out to win the Delaware Handicap (G2). She was upset last out in the Personal Ensign, racing wide much of the trip and the upset winner got the jump on her heading for home. She rallied well to come up just a half-length short. Is the trip to Dubai finally taking a toll? A tough call here but I think our top pick will offer a bit more value for the top spot.

Cash for Clunkers tossed in a clunker last out in the Del 'Cap, fading to finish 38 1/2 lengths back of Royal Delta. She brings some early zip to the race here and she gave It's Tricky a fight two back in the Ogden Phipps, beaten just 3/4 of a length after setting sharp early fractions. She is better than she showed last out and both of her trips over the main track here were solid. Her career top came here three back in the mud and is another that figures to move up if the track has any moisture in it.

WIN: #6 to win at 7-5 or better.

EX: 3,6 / 3,4,5,6

TRI: 3,6 / 3,4,5,6 / 3,4,5,6,7
