NFL Odds Preview: Vikings face the Packers
The Minnesota Vikings allowed the New York Giants to pick up their first win of the season in their matchup on Monday night, and now they'll return home to face the division-rival Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football. Here's a look at the Week 8 NFL betting calendar.
Minnesota's struggles continued on Monday night in a 23-7 loss as a 4-point underdog on the NFL odds to a Giants team that had entered the contest at 0-6 on the season. The Vikings are now 1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS on the season, and 5-1 on the totals for bettors on the OVER/UNDER after they turned in their first UNDER result of the season against New York.
And UNDER bettors can probably thank Vikings quarterback Josh Freeman for that payout, as he completed just 20 of his 53 pass attempts for 190 yards with no touchdowns and one interception against the Giants. Freeman signed with the team two weeks ago after he was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and is expected to start over Matt Cassel and Christian Ponder once again on Sunday night.
The Packers, meanwhile, are 4-2 both SU and ATS on the season after knocking off the Cleveland Browns 31-13 as a 7.5-point home favorite over the weekend. Aaron Rodgers completed 25 of his 36 pass attempts for 260 yards through the air with three touchdowns and no interceptions in that win for Green Bay, which has now won three straight games both SU and ATS to take a small lead over the 4-3 Chicago Bears and the 4-3 Detroit Lions in the NFC North standings. The Vikings are three games behind.
Last season the Packers and Vikings split their two meetings both SU and ATS, with Green Bay winning 23-14 as a 7-point home favorite, and Minnesota winning 37-34 as a 3-point home underdog. Overall the Packers hold the edge at 6-4 both SU and ATS in their past 10 games against the Vikings, with the OVER/UNDER 8-2 in those 10 contests for totals bettors.
Other games involving road favorites in Week 8 include Carolina (-7) at Tampa Bay on Thursday Night Football, Pittsburgh (-2.5) at Oakland on Sunday afternoon, and then Seattle (-11.5) at St. Louis on Monday Night Football. As well, the San Francisco 49ers are pegged as 17-point favorites against the Jacksonville Jaguars for their game over in London on Sunday.
Making up the rest of this week's NFL slate are the Giants at Philadelphia (-5.5), Dallas at Detroit (-3), Miami at New England (-7.5), Cleveland at Kansas City (-9), Buffalo at New Orleans (-13), the Jets at Cincinnati (-7.5), Washington at Denver (-14), and Atlanta at Arizona (-2.5).
