NFL Betting Preview: Patriots on road in Atlanta
The Atlanta Falcons have struggled out of the gates this season, and they'll be up against a tough opponent in their Week 4 matchup on Sunday Night Football as they play host to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
The Falcons lost 23-17 in New Orleans in Week 1, beat St. Louis 31-24 at home in Week 2, then fell 27-23 in Miami over the weekend to begin the season at 1-2 both SU and ATS on the NFL betting lines at the sportsbooks. Totals bettors have watched the OVER/UNDER go 2-1 in Falcons games through the first three weeks of the season.
Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan went 23 of 38 for 231 yards passing in his team's loss to the Dolphins in Week 3, with two touchdown strikes and one interception in the contest. Julio Jones had nine catches for 115 yards in the game, while Jason Snelling and Levine Toilolo had the TD receptions. Jacquizz Rodgers rushed for 86 yards on 18 carries in the loss.
Now the Falcons will have to go up against an undefeated Patriots team, albeit one that is just 1-2 ATS on the season after slipping past Buffalo (23-21) and the Jets (13-10) in the first two weeks of the season before easily dispatching the Buccaneers in a 23-2 home win in their Week 3 contest. The Patriots are 0-3 on the OVER/UNDER so far this season.
Brady completed 25 of his 36 pass attempts for 225 yards in the Patriots' win over Tampa Bay, with two touchdown passes and one interception on the day. Kenbrell Thompkins had both touchdown catches for New England in that game, with LeGarrette Blount leading the way on the ground with 65 yards on his 14 carries.
The Patriots last faced the Falcons back in September 2009, winning 26-10 as a 4.5-point home favorite on the NFL betting lines at the sportsbooks in that UNDER result. For Sunday night's game on NBC the Falcons are pegged as the slim 1-point home favorites, with the OVER/UNDER set at 49.5 points.
Week 4 of the NFL season kicks off in St. Louis on Thursday night with the Rams playing host to San Francisco; the Niners are the 3-point favorites for that game, with the OVER/UNDER listed at 42 points. The Monday Night Football matchup is then Miami at New Orleans, with the Saints set as the 7-point favorites and the OVER/UNDER listed at 47.
Rounding out the Week 4 NFL matchups on Sunday afternoon this week are Baltimore (-3.5) at Buffalo, Cincinnati (-5) at Cleveland, Seattle (-3) at Houston, Chicago at Detroit (-2.5), Indianapolis (-9) at Jacksonville, the Giants at Kansas City (-4), Pittsburgh at Minnesota (pick'em), Arizona at Tampa Bay (-2.5), the Jets at Tennessee (-4.5), Washington at Oakland, Dallas (-1) at San Diego, and Philadelphia at Denver.
