MLB Odds Preview: Four-team race in the AL East

The Toronto Blue Jays were the favorites on the MLB futures to win the American League East crown heading into this season, but instead it's the other four clubs in the division in the hunt for that top spot heading into June's baseball betting calendar.

The Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, and Tampa Bay Rays are all contending in the AL East heading into the third month of the MLB season, but it's the BoSox who start the week in first place. Boston will be at home at Fenway Park this week for three-game series against the Texas Rangers and the Los Angeles Angels.

Looking at the MLB betting trends, Boston has managed to win just two of its past 10 games against Texas, and the Rangers swept them down in Arlington earlier in the season. Similarly, the Red Sox are just 2-8 in their last 10 games against the Angels, with Boston currently riding an eight-game losing streak against Los Angeles.

The Yankees get their week underway on Monday at home against the Cleveland Indians before heading west to face the Seattle Mariners on the road over the weekend. New York played four games in Cleveland earlier this season and came away with a 3-1 record in those contests; Monday's pitching matchup is expected to be Justin Masterson (8-3, 3.07 ERA) for the Indians vs. Andy Pettitte (4-3, 3.83 ERA) for the Yankees. New York lost two of three games against Seattle at home back in May.

The Orioles will be looking to pick up some ground this week when they take on the last-place Astros in Houston; those two teams haven't met on the field since 2008, when the O's swept three games at home. Houston owns the worst record in the AL.

Baltimore then has a key showdown in Tampa Bay against the Rays coming up this weekend, with the Orioles losing five of the nine games between the two teams so far this season. The Orioles and the Rays last met in a three-game set in Baltimore in the middle of May, with Tampa Bay putting up 25 runs in a sweep of that series.

Tampa Bay's other MLB betting series this week sees them in Detroit to take on the Tigers for three games starting on Tuesday night. The Rays' Matt Moore (8-0, 2.18 ERA) has been moved up to start Tuesday night's contest; the lefthander has allowed three or more runs just twice in 11 outings so far this season. Detroit won five of seven meetings with Tampa Bay last year, with the OVER/UNDER going 0-5-2.

Elsewhere on the baseball odds menu early this week it's Colorado at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at Atlanta, and Arizona at St. Louis, while other notable weekend series include Cleveland at Detroit, St. Louis at Cincinnati, and San Francisco at Arizona.
