MLB Betting Outlook: AL East teams in spotlight
All five teams in the American League East could be sitting at .500 or better in the standings when the All-Star Break begins in a couple of weeks, and that balance in the division is hurting each of the clubs on the odds to win the pennant at the sportsbooks.
The oddsmakers' favorites to win the AL Pennant heading into the first week of July all hail from outside of the AL East, with the Central's Detroit Tigers atop the list at 13/4 odds, and the West's Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics next at 11/2 and 6/1 odds.
And after that we find the AL East teams – the Boston Red Sox (13/2), Toronto Blue Jays (13/2), Baltimore Orioles (15/2), New York Yankees (10/1), and Tampa Bay Rays (14/1). Boston leads the division standings heading into the week, and they also boast the most victories and the best run differential in the entire American League right now.
That has the Red Sox in the AL East's driver's seat as they host the San Diego Padres in a three-game interleague series starting on Tuesday night before hitting the road for three games against the Angels in Anaheim beginning on Friday night. Boston got a visit from Los Angeles at Fenway Park back at the start of June, winning two of those three games on the MLB betting lines; each of the three contests were OVER results.
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, have four games at home against Detroit starting on Monday afternoon before the Twins head to the Rogers Centre for three games on the weekend. Toronto lost two of its three games against the Tigers in Detroit back in April when they stumbled out of the gates; all three of those games were OVER results too.
The Orioles are on the road for the entire first week of July, playing three games in Chicago against the White Sox starting on Tuesday night before heading to Yankee Stadium for a three-game weekend set. Baseball bettors have watched the Orioles go 7-3 over their 10 most recent games against the White Sox dating back two seasons.
The Yankees warm up for their series against Baltimore by playing four games against the Twins in Minnesota in MLB betting action starting on Monday night. New York went 4-3 against Minnesota last season, with the OVER/UNDER 4-1-2 in those matchups.
Finally, the Rays will be looking for some easy wins in Houston in a four-game set to start off the week before they return home for three games against the White Sox starting on Friday night. The Rays and White Sox split their four meetings in Chicago at the end of April, with totals bettors watching the OVER/UNDER go 3-0-1 in that span.
The Cleveland Indians (16/1), Los Angeles Angels (16/1), and Kansas City Royals (22/1) make up the second tier of AL Pennant odds heading into the month of July at the sportsbooks, with the Minnesota Twins at 66/1, the Chicago White Sox at 75/1, the Seattle Mariners at 100/1, and the Houston Astros the true longshot on the list at 500/1.
