Today's Sports News
Friday’s $500,000 Ballerina (G1) at Saratoga looks like a showdown between the brilliant fillies Turbulent Descent (9-5) and It’s Tricky (8-5), but it appears likely only one will show up.
It’s Tricky is also entered in Sunday’s $600,000 Personal Ensign (G1) at Saratoga, and her trainer Kiaran McLaughlin has indicated that she likely will scratch on Friday and race on Sunday.
If that is indeed the case, that will make Turbulent Descent the overwhelming favorite in the Ballerina.
With just two weeks remaining before the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants kick off the NFL regular-season schedule, another weekly round of preseason games will serve to whet your appetite beginning with three solid matchups on Thursday night.
First up are the winless Green Bay Packers (0-2) who are currently sitting as 2.5-point road favorites as they prepare to tangle with the unbeaten Bengals (2-0) in Cincinnati.
Star quarterbacks Tom Brady and Michael Vick are both expected to play significant minutes tonight as the favored Patriots play host to the Eagles in a Monday Night Football preseason matchup at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.
New England is currently listed as a 1.5-point favorite at most online sportsbooks tracked by OddsShark.com, with the total recently climbing to 41.5 points.
Rookie pivot Andrew Luck will get another taste of NFL preseason action on Sunday night as the Colts visit Pittsburgh to battle the Steelers in what promises to be a stern test for the No. 1 overall draft pick out of Stanford.
Luck and the Colts are currently listed as 3.5-point underdogs for their matchup against the favored Steelers at Heinz Field, with the total sitting at 37.5 points.
There are two Grade 1 races on Saturday’s Saratoga card, featuring a strong group of three-year-old fillies and some of the top turf runners currently in training.
A field of nine will line up to go 1 ½ miles on the grass in the $600,000 Sword Dancer (G1), and the following race features a very competitive field of seven three-year-old fillies who will go in the $600,000 Alabama (G1).
Both races will be televised live on NBC Sports Network’s “Summer at Saratoga” which gets underway at 5:00 ET.
A field of eight will line up in Saratoga’s feature on Wednesday, the $100,000 Troy for three-year-olds and upward going 5 ½ furlongs on the turf course.
As of 11:30am ET this morning the weather in Saratoga was looking good, with the main track listed as fast and the turf course firm, although there is a chance of a few mid afternoon thunderstorms.
The Spa’s leading trainer Todd Pletcher will send out the 9-5 morning line favorite Bridgetown, who is coming off a third place finish in the Willard Straight at Saratoga on July 27.
As controversy continues to swirl about Washington's plan to shut down starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg, the young ace with the reconstructed elbow is scheduled to toe the rubber Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco as the Nationals square off against Tim Lincecum and the Giants in the final game of a three-game series between the NL playoff contenders.
The first full week of NFL preseason action wraps up Monday night (8:00 pm Eastern) with the Dallas Cowboys hitting the field in Oakland as a slight 1-point underdog against the favored Raiders.
This will be the first preseason game for both the Cowboys and Raiders, who finished with identical 8-8 records in 2011 and missed the playoffs. Against the spread, Oakland posted a record of 9-6-1 while Dallas was 5-10-1.
Trainer Chad Brown won the $200,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame (G2) at Saratoga last year with Big Blue Kitten, who had started off his career running for a claiming tag, breaking his maiden for $35,000 at Gulfstream Park.
Fast forward to this year and Brown will saddle Yari in today’s Hall of Fame, a 1 1/16 mile turf event that drew a field of eight.
Washington and Buffalo have played six times in the regular season since 1993 and the Redskins never won.
They never even covered a spread.
Does that matter tonight as the NFL preseason schedule gets hopping? The Redskins are small road favorites against the Bills and hope to ride RG3 fever to a victory.
Some other trends for tonight's slate of six games:
- Steelers are 5-1 ATS past 6 preseason games vs the Eagles (who will be inspired by or drained by the emotion of Coach Andy Reid's personal loss this week)
